Five Eggs!

Hi there,

We have set up lights in the henhouse so that the hens get enough light to lay. The three new hens were just about to start laying when the seasons started changing, so now with the new lights they are all laying eggs. Yesterday we had five eggs, a record number for one day for us!

So glad to hear the girls are well, safe and happy. We were the first set of human parents of the Orpingtons and Austrolorp you adopted, and thought we'd take a look at your great website to check up on those darling little ones!

Thank you for being wonderful parents. We're so glad they are laying and got to gorge on plums this fall! And please tell them that all their sisters (and brother) are doing very well (other than flying over the fence to wreak havoc in the garden...)

Great to hear from you Jeff! The hens are very happy.

We had a little trouble with one of the white Orpingtons, but I was able to examine her and be sure it wasn't a stuck egg, and after a few days she was quite back to normal! It was the first time I'd ever checked inside a chicken's vent, and I felt a bit rude, but she had had some poop problems, and it was necessary to just check for a broken or stuck egg. I also gave her a few warm baths for a few days to clean her up.

The Australorp squats down when I come into the hen house, so I've been petting her when she does that and she really seems to expect it now! She seems a bit more sensitive than the other two. I thought the squatting behavior was a fear reaction, but maybe it is just deference...

There is quite a lot of adventure in this new experience. Right now we are getting so many eggs we are giving them to neighbors.

Glad her brother and sisters are doing well!
